I’ve been through a multi-year chronic illness, long stretches of depression and heartbreak before, but nothing –

Compared to the pain of losing my soulmate, knowing that I was the one who let him go.
After the first 5 months of dating the most incredible man I’d ever met – Charlie – I experienced a relapse in chronic illness symptoms.
When I met him, I was healthy and in remission – and I had thought that the whole chronic illness part of my life was over.
All Charlie knew was Healthy Megan. The radiant one. The pretty one. The one who speaks in poetry and laughs in verses. The fully alive one with magic in her eyes.
So when I started to get sick again, I was a sinking ship, and I didn’t want him near the wreckage, because I knew how ugly it could get.
I thought Sick Megan would be too much for him to handle.
Because for years, I told myself that the darker parts of myself – the health issues, depression, weight fluctuations, sensitivity, intensity – were all untouchable.
So I let Charlie go, thinking I was doing him a favor.
In reality, I shattered his heart. And then, after I was well again and reached out, he had seemingly already moved on…and in that moment, he shattered mine.
I never gave him the chance to make the decision to love me – ALL OF ME – for himself...
...UNTIL HE DID.
He read my book that was published in the months of our breakup all about my healing journey, and told me that he hadn’t moved on. He wanted to be with ALL of me, even IF and WHEN it got hard. Like, really, really hard.
